After earning a BFA from Texas Tech and moving to Santa Fe, John began his art career on a wing and a prayer. His art and passion inspired him to travel to Italy and study the old masters up close and personal. Discovering an early affinity for American master’s like Frederick Church and George Innes influenced him to develop his skills in traditional painting methods. This dedication ultimately lead to becoming an accomplished hyper- realist painter. In reaction to the time
consuming attention to detail and process, John began to explore abstract expressionism as a release. Appreciating the immediacy and unpredictable nature of abstraction he began to explore marrying the two styles. The results are an exploration of application, process, form, subject and technique. A present fascination with the majestic beauty of
the horse and it’s capacity to personify our nature as humans is currently the driving force behind his work. Having been represented in Santa Fe, Colorado, Texas, New York and
the UK. John considers himself fortunate to have led a 25 year career in art. Blessed to be a husband and a father he is an artist by heart and by trade. John DeFrance spends his time living and creating from his home studio in Prosper Texas.
